Crane Institute of America to introduce new train-the-trainer programs for the crane and rigging industry at CONEXPO-CON/AGG
November 18, 2013 – Crane Institute of America, Sanford, Fla. will feature “The Complete Package” at Booth 2973 in the Gold Lot at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, March 4-8, 2014.
To make it easier for corporate trainers to maintain ongoing training at their facilities, Crane Institute has introduced a new train-the-trainer combination program called “The Complete Package.” In two weeks’ time, trainers can become a Crane Institute of America certified trainer and an authorized practical examiner for Crane Institute Certification (CIC), a nationally accredited, OSHA-recognized certification for crane operators, riggers and signalpersons. In addition, trainers may license Crane Institute of America’s online training program materials. Both limited and unlimited licenses (per year) are available.
“The Complete Package eliminated the cost for trainers to develop and maintain their own training programs, and it makes training more accessible to workers, thereby increasing job site safety,” said Jim Headley, Director of Crane Institute of America.
Trainers participating in the mobile crane or rigger train-the-trainer courses will learn how to conduct the same training programs that are used by Crane Institute of America’s instructors. Trainer topics include “Learning how to be a great trainer and facilitator,” and “How to create a learning environment.” Certified trainers can purchase student materials, books, workbooks, and other resources created for the training program.
According to Headley, quality training is more about the program than it is the instructor. “When provided with properly developed materials, good trainers have a greater chance of success.”
“It’s a bit like NASCAR,” he says. “The drivers are the ones that get champagne poured on them at the end of the race, but the mechanics working behind the scenes were just as important in the success of that...
For the second year, Crane Institute of America and Crane Institute Certification (CIC) provided a scholarship for training and certification through Florida Crane Owner’s Council (FCOC). This scholarship allows one crane operator to attend a 4 day Mobile Crane Operator Training Program and take the CIC Mobile Crane Operator Certification Exams at our headquarters near Orlando, Florida.
On September 13, during the FCOC meeting in Orlando, the winner of the scholarship was announced. We would like to congratulate Mr. Jimmie King of Bryson Crane Rental. Mr. King has 10 years experience with cranes and is qualified to operate boom trucks and telescoping boom cranes. He is also a qualified rigger and signalperson.
We are pleased to see Mr. King receive training and become a certified crane operator. It is a united effort by both employers and employees to assure a safer lifting industry.
Mr. King is taking an important step in documenting his skills as a certified and qualified crane operator… are you?
This week is a perfect example of what Crane Institute can provide for you. Attend our 7-day Mobile Crane Operator Train-the-Trainer program followed by the 3-day CIC Practical Examiner Training program. Students that successfully complete these programs can receive a CIA Trainer Certification, CIC Authorized Practical Examiner Card, and an Accredited Mobile Crane Operator Certification. Since we do all the testing here, both written and practicals, your dollar goes further.
Speaking of testing, meet our CIC Proctor Anne Davison. Prior to being a proctor for CIC, Ann worked for AT&T and AAA. She has a B.S. in Professional Management and a Masters in Human Resource Development. We are pleased to have her as our proctor. However, don’t ask her anything about cranes, because she wont be able to help you, that’s not her area of expertise! This makes her a great candidate for proctoring the written exams.
CIC procedures require that a non-bias 3rd party proctor the nationally accredited written exams. Crane Institute adheres to these strict guidelines, and we do this for the best price around!

Barney Shorter; CIA Certified Mobile Crane Trainer and CIC Authorized Practical Examiner
CIA: What training programs have you attended with Crane Institute (CIA)?
Shorter: Well I’ve attended the Train-the-Trainer program; I’ve done the operator training program and I’ve done the Practical Examiner Training.
CIA: Was the training on mobile cranes?
Shorter: Yes, mobile cranes.
CIA: Have you been trained on other equipment; overhead cranes, rigging?
Shorter: No overhead, no rigging, but I’ve gotten certified on every discipline from the 0-21 ton, 21-75 ton, over 75 ton, lattice boom carrier and lattice boom crawler so we can train just about everybody on any mobile crane.
CIA: As a CIA certified mobile crane trainer, have you taken advantage of the ‘Complete Package’ offer?
Shorter: Absolutely, I was in the training in the beginning of August last year, and I guess that’s 5 months ago and I’ve probably trained well over 130 people in 5 months, in every discipline; small, medium and large telescoping boom cranes and I’ve given practicals to just about everyone of those students.
