FREE CIA Rigger/Signalperson Qualification

An excellent journeyman-level training program designed to ensure that rigging personnel meet OSHA’s definition of a “qualified rigger”. The sole goal of this program is to prevent below the hook rigging accidents caused by personnel incorrectly performing rigging tasks and incorrectly communicating with crane operators by hand and voice signals. This program teaches them the proper way by following applicable OSHA and ASME standards and our popular Rigging handbook.

  • How to properly use wire rope, chain and synthetic web slings, rigging hardware, and lifting devices.
  • How to interpret capacity charts for wire rope, slings and rigging hardware when performing proof test.
  • The three methods used to calculate sling loading.

  • The correct way to give ASME hand signals & voice signals.
  • ASME responsibilities of riggers and signalpersons.
  • Procedures for safely working cranes near power lines. 
  • How to interpret and comply with OSHA's Rigging standards.

CIA CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Document at least 2 years of work experience rigging and lifting loads using rigging equipment. (A trainee qualification will be issued to applicants with less than 2 years' experience).
  • Pass a written examination.
  • Possess physical ability to perform rigging tasks.

Requirements for Rigger/Signalperson Qualification

  • Complete the Crane Institute of America Qualified Rigger/Signalperson training program
  • Possess the physical ability to safely perform rigging tasks
  • Have a minimum of two years rigging experience (A trainee qualification is available for personnel who do not meet experience requirement)
  • Pass a written examination
  • Pass a practical examination on signaling
